With over 200 performances in 2015 The Groove Orient has been busier than ever. They released a second studio album "Generation Y" last January and since then TGO has made their debut at festivals such as Suwannee Hulaween, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Florida Music Festival, Little Econ Love Fest, Gov-Fest, Dunedin Brewery's Oktobeer Fest, and Pass The Good. The Groove Orient has also had the opportunity to open for some killer bands in 2015 including: George Porter Jr. & Runnin' Pardners, Tab Benoit, The Main Squeeze, Turkuaz, Monophonics, The Heavy Pets, Kaleigh Baker, Roosevelt Collier, Peoples Blues of Richmond, SunSquabi, Dynohunter, Zach Deputy, Cope, Thomas Wynn & The Believers, The London Souls, and many more. With over 200 performances in one year it is almost impossible to break them down to a Top 10 list. Each and every show is amazing in its own way but here are 10 that stood out from the rest!
10. September 26 - Red Lion Pub - w/ The Heavy Pets
The Groove Orient has been fortunate to play some awesome shows at Red Lion Pub including the bands first ever live performance back in 2013, and the Grand Opening of Red Lions new music hall "The Lions Den". Each show was a special experience however when The Heavy Pets came to town on September 26, 2015 Red Lion was on another level. This show was the highest attended show at Red Lion Pub packing in close to 200 attendees!
9. February 5 - BackBooth - w/ George Porter Jr. & Runnin Pardners
Opening up for your musical heroes is a mind blowing experience but when your heroes compliment your playing... woooooww! The entire experience was surreal. Tommy still talks about how George P. is the man for helping him move that 400lb. Hammond Organ up on to the stage. Then Tom even got to sit in with their band! During their set George kept making comments into the microphone about Harry's bass playing. Over all amazing show and great experience sharing the stage with such an awesome person.
8. That one time at TANQUERAYS!
The Groove Orient has been performing every Tuesday at Tanquerays in downtown Orlando, FL for a little over two years now! To pick one show or experience at Tanquerays that tops the other is impossible. Every Tuesday is a new experience. You never know who's going to walk through that door or who might jump up and sit in. Catch us this Tuesday at Tanq's!
7. October 4 - Dunedin Brewery - Oktobeer Fest
One thing you should know about Dunedin Brewery is that this place is AWESOME! The beer is amazing, the food is ridiculously good, and the music... the music man! They have a live band perform every day of the week and its almost always a packed house! So you can imagine that when they throw an event / festival it gets pretty rowdy! We got to open for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong for Dunedin's Oktobeer Fest in early October this year and it was crazy! The crowd was wild and the beer was flowing making this one of our favorite shows of 2015!
6. May 29 - The Social - w/ Kaleigh Baker
On May 29, 2015 we through our first Oriented Music Group show at The Social in downtown Orlando. The line up was stacked with local heavy hitters: Liquid Spiral, Jonnie Morgan Band, The Groove Orient, and Kaleigh Baker. Liquid Spiral kicked things off and we performed second followed by Jonnie Morgan Band. Then it was time for the main event Kaleigh Baker. This was our second show ever performing Kaleigh's music as her backing band and what a wild time it was. 380 people ended up attending The Social that night for four stellar performances. Check out The Groove Orient and Kaleigh Bakers live sets below!
5. June 26 - Roosevelt Collier Suwannee Getdown - Suwannee Music Park
The Roosevelt Collier Suwannee Getdown is a bi-monthly music series held at the beautiful Spirit of The Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, FL. The Getdown is held in the Music Hall over two days at the park. Local Florida bands open up the evening with their own sets leading to the main event... Mr. Roosevelt Collier! Throughout Roosevelts set he pulls up musicians from the opening bands to "Getdown" and jam with his musical outfit. This Getdown was extremely special because it was the debut of this music series and because two members of The Groove Orient, Tommy Shugart and former drummer Paul Terry, got the call to be in Roosevelt Colliers band! It was a wild intimate setting at The Spirit of The Suwannee that weekend with some next level crunchy tunes.
4. October 3 - The Social - w/ The Main Squeeze
October 3, 2015 The Groove Orient threw their second Oriented Music Group show this time with heavy hitters, The Main Squeeze! Local Orlando band The Happy Campers kicked things off with The Groove Orient performing second followed by The Main Squeeze. It was a saturday night in downtown Orlando and the crowd was pouring in. Orlando City Soccer team just won a clutch must win home game and the fans came to the show to celebrate! The energy in the room was next level!
3. May 14-17 - Orange Blossom Jamboree - Sertoma Youth Ranch
So this was The Groove Orients first Orange Blossom Jamboree and we now know why OBJ is so special. First of all the festival grounds are amazing. Sertoma Youth Ranch in Brooksville, FL offers camping in the woods, in a field, or you can even hook up your RV. The festival has over 40 local Florida bands on multiple stages making it a big FL family throw down. Tommy Shugart was given the privilege to be an artist at large and got the chance to sit in with numerous musical acts including The Lee Boys, and The Legendary JC's! OBJ just released their artists for 2016 and we are pleased to be welcomed back! For more info check the links below!
2. January 30 - House Of Blues - "Generation Y" CD Rlease Party
2015 was kicked off with a bang! On January 30 we threw a party at House of Blues Orlando in celebration of our second studio release, Generation Y. Music was kicked off by Laney Jones & The Lively Spirits, followed by Evan Taylor Jones, The Groove Orient, and then last but not least Hor!zon! This show was crazy! Every band showed up with ridiculous performances and each band brought their own unique crowd totaling over 1300 attendees! The crowd reaction to some of the new songs performed still gives me chills to this day. This show set the standard for 2015.
1. October 30 - November 1 - Suwannee Hulaween
Suwannee Hulaween... What can I say? Suwannee Hulaween broke the attendants record for the Spirit of The Suwannee Music Park totaling in over 21,000 attendees, it has been ranked as the #1 Music Festival of 2015 by Live for Live Music, and is now considered the best Haloween Festival in the WORLD! This was The Groove Orients first major music festival appearance and we couldn't have asked for a better musical opportunity! It was an honor to be on the same line up as so many talented bands and musicians such as: The String Cheese Incident, Primus, Pretty Lights, Lettuce, Griz, Dopapod, The New Mastersounds, all the florida bands and so many more! The Groove Orient got to kick off the music on Haloween Day at 12:30pm on the Campground Stage which was home to all the local florida bands throughout the weekend. Russ and Andy from Receptor Sound and Lighting made us feel right at home from set up to tear down. We had good friends Christian Ryan and Kaleigh Baker join us for some surprise sit ins and the crowd was on fire! It was awesome that so many friends woke up so early to catch our set at Suwannee! Thanks to Matt Beck for waking up early and helping us transport all of our gear at such an early hour. And a big special thank you to Paul Levine for asking The Groove Orient to perform! This was hands down our favorite show of 2015!
2015 turned out to be an amazing year with some amazing shows! Thank you everybody that has ever attended one of our shows, thrown one of our shows, or been a part of this musical journey in any way! Thank you for making live music thrive! Cheers to another year! 2016 here we come!
